Docs Donut Film Club Zoom Call #2 | June 1st

June 1st | 5 PM PDT/8 PM EDT

DONUT DOCS FILM CLUB invites you to discuss the Threshold-supported film GATHER.

Hello Dear Donuts!

In 2018 the Food and Farming Funding Circle joined the Documentary Film Funding Circle co-to fund this visually sumptuous documentary about Native American foods and food sovereignty.  GATHER’s film festival screenings were cancelled
this spring by the pandemic.  Instead the film will have a virtual release at the Human Rights Watch Film Fest on June 20 but Threshold members have advance viewing access!  There is a LOT of buzz and momentum around GATHER with a $2.1M outreach campaign thru the First Nations Development Institute to support Native communities.  Director Sanjay Rawal has generously given Threshold the opportunity to view this not-yet-released film (link below) and will join us for the zoom meeting.

In addition to speaking with the director, donut funders of the film will offer cinematic insights and discuss the decision to co-fund it. Members of the (former) Food and Farming Funding Circle will share a cornucopia of wisdom, with plenty of time for Q&A and action steps to move toward the restorative revolution.

Director Sanjay Rawal says  “Gather isn’t about the pandemic in Indian Country, but it does outline the path forward for marginalized communities whose food systems have been severely impacted by Covid, and whose health has been impacted by western food systems.  One of the reasons that Indian Country is being hit so hard by Covid 19 is poor impacts from a century (or more) of imposed commodity diets, destruction of healthy traditional food systems, and lack of programs to reintroduce those practices. Gather focuses on the long-term solutions and the work being done in Indian Country right now. Covid 19 is just reinforcing the need for more work like it.”

GATHER Film Club will meet on Monday June 1 at 5pm PDT/ 8pm EDT for 90 minutes.  Please watch the film on your own, pop some maize, and join us for a lively discussion about this beautiful film that offers a long-term remedy to current and ancestral pain by harvesting indigenous wisdom to heal our planet, our bodies and our souls with native foods and sustainable practices.

Yours in celluloid and streaming,
Wendy, Ian and the members of Threshold’s High Impact Documentary Film Funding Circle (DOCS)
